Case study

Moorfields Eye Hospital – Dubai, UAE

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the oldest, and one of the largest, centres for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world. More than 200 years after its foundation in 1804, Moorfields moved beyond the United Kingdom to open Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai in 2007.

In 2016, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust partnered with DeepMind, one of the world’s leading neuroscience-inspired artificial intelligence companies.

The partnership utilises AI technology to analyse optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans: complex images of the back of the eye, which are used to detect and diagnose serious eye conditions and diseases. Machine learning technology has been successfully trained on thousands of historic de-personalised eye scans to identify signs of eye disease and recommend how patients should be referred for care.

In August 2018, initial results recorded a breakthrough. The AI system can recommend the correct referral decision for over 50 eye diseases with 94% accuracy, matching world-leading eye experts. The next step is for the research to go through clinical trials to evidence how this technology might improve patient care in practice.
